Peter Lik Alternative
Peter Lik has developed a niche market for his photography prints, one that requires deep pockets in order to obtain his prints. While his images are certainly commanding and worthy of a high price point, it doesn’t mean that it is reasonably obtainable for the rest of us – or even necessary to pay such a price for a high quality art piece. Luckily there is a Peter Lik alternative.

My personal philosophy with my artwork is to offer a premium product alternative at a more reasonable price, and not the highly premium prices you pay for a Peter Lik piece. In the art world, you still get what you pay for, but it need not be stratospheric. This is where my alternative to Peter Lik pieces come into play:

I realized years ago that the ultimate expression of my work was having premium prints of my art produced. My goal was to utilize the highest quality prints and materials to ensure a competitive alternative to the highest priced prints available from Peter Lik and others. The process of vetting and searching for such a printer took me a few years, but ultimately I found 2 different printer companies to partner with that absolutely bring the artwork to life. This was one of the biggest steps in creating art prints that rival and can be an alternative to a Peter Lik piece.

Lik’s Printing Process
While this is a generalized guide for brevity, Peter Lik’s printing process most closely resembles something like this:
- High Resolution Photography: Lik uses a range of high-end photography equipment in order to obtain a large amount of photographic detail. He is known for his usage of large format cameras to film the type of detail that he is known for in his landscapes.
- Post-Production: Commonly known as the “Digital Darkroom”, he uses digital processing techniques on the computer to bring shape and life to his prints. Visual elements such as color, different types of contrast, and sharpness are all digitally controlled in order to achieve his desired visual impact.
- Printing: This is where the magic of Peter Lik’s images really captivate. While there is more details below on the full printing process, the basics of his printing process is that his photographs are created on various mediums, typically including acrylic, metal, and metallic paper. These materials, when chosen properly for the quality, give a vivid and glossy finish that enhance the colors and create a sense of depth and dimension in the final print.
- Framing: Peter Lik’s photographs are typically displayed in custom-made frames (most famously his roma frames from Italy) that complement the image and enhance its visual appeal. The frames are designed to be an integral part of the artwork presentation.
- Limited Edition Prints: Lik is known for creating limited edition runs of his more popular pieces. While this creates exclusivity and value to his artwork, it does add cost to the end buyer.
- Display and Lighting: Another important piece to the way his work is displayed in his galleries. The right lighting will significantly enhance the viewers experience of the photograph, and really shows off the dimensional and color properties of the materials he chooses to print on.
What makes a Peter Lik Print?
Now for the nitty gritty – What makes a Peter Lik print? Let’s start with the paper. Lik uses a type of paper known as “silver halide” for his photographic prints. Silver halide paper, often referred to as C-type or Chromogenic paper, is a traditional and widely respected medium for producing photographic prints. However, another contender known as “metallic paper” has very similar visual photographic properties to silver halide, but also has some distinct advantages:
- Unique Metallic Sheen: While the silver halide that Lik uses for his prints is known to have a specific sheen and also a three-dimensional effect (especially when using correct lighting), the properties that metallic paper will display can have even more of a 3d effect on the photo. This three-dimensional look is something that is highly sought out by Peter Lik’s followers, and is something that I specifically offer to my own collectors.
- Enhanced color: Metallic paper is known for making colors appear more vibrant and eye-catching. It can amplify the intensity and saturation of colors in the image, creating a visually stimulating effect that works particularly well for certain subjects like landscapes, sunsets, and vivid scenes.
- Reflectivity and Light Play: The surface of metallic paper is highly reflective, which allows it to interact with ambient light in intriguing ways. This reflectivity can create a captivating interplay of light and dark areas on the print, making it suitable for images that have a lot of dark to light contrast, but also a lot of color contrast. When all of these things come together, images begin to look so incredible that you would almost swear you are looking out of a window into the world of your print.
It is for these reasons that my printers of choice utilize metallic paper as it’s source for my images. Since the paper is the most important aspect of any print, it always pays to invest in the most profound piece of the print – the actual paper itself. It serves as a perfect alternative to Peter Lik’s offerings.
Peter Lik Acrylic Facemount
The second step to Peter Lik’s print making process is the Acrylic Facemount process – this is a meticulous and high-quality method of presenting and preserving photographic art. It enhances the visual impact of the photograph, providing depth, clarity, and a seamless, frameless appearance. It’s particularly well-suited for photographs that aim to captivate viewers and make a bold statement. The combination of high-quality materials and careful craftsmanship contributes to the distinctive and captivating nature of acrylic facemount prints. In addition, it produces a luxurious level of gloss over the print itself, and only furthers to help create more of the three-dimensional effect that viewers love.
In addition, this facemounting process is paired with a “floatmount frame”. This gives the appearance of the print and artwork visually floating off of the wall. Compared to more traditional methods of hanging artwork, a floatmount frame will present the artwork completely parallel to the wall, and avoids hanging the artwork on an angle.
It is with all of these considerations that I have chosen the printers for my artwork wisely. Squarely aimed at producing an alternative to a Peter Lik piece, my prints all employ the same types of techniques that are used by Peter Lik and his team.
When you combine metallic paper with an acrylic facemount, you create a visually striking and captivating piece of artwork. The metallic paper enhances the vibrancy and color pop of the image, making it appear even more vivid and surreal. This effect is further amplified by the reflective quality of the acrylic, which adds depth and dimensionality, further deepening the three-dimensional appearance of the metallic paper. The result is a visually stunning and immersive artwork that draws viewers into the image – just like a Peter Lik, but an alternative at a much better price.

Print Style and Options
Now I am able to produce these unique print pieces that absolutely jump off of the print and grab attention. The materials and process allows the print to appear to be almost 3 dimensional in it’s presentation. The special print surfaces that are used for my prints reflect light and create a glow in the print that makes it appear as though you are looking through a window when viewed in a bright area, or when directly lighting the print. This effect is something that Peter Lik was known for in his prints, and sought out by me when choosing the printers for my artwork. In the end, it creates a very special viewing experience.
My artwork is now available in 2 different options: Acrylic facemount prints (using special metallic paper, and also ready to hang), and Acrylic facemount prints that are framed (also using special metallic paper, ready to hang).
