A week long trip to Death Valley provided incredible displays of light and conditions in the spring of 2025. We got lucky to be immersed in sand storms that create very unique images and carved out beautiful luminosity along the ribbons of the Mesquite sand dunes. What’s amazing is how these dunes stand the test of time and will largely remain the same for decades, regardless of how much the sand gets blown around. This image represents a good amount of wind we experienced on this day, and the very little direct sunlight created an incredible color contrast of gold dunes and a blue background. A big part of photographing in areas like this is spending as much time as you can in order to scout the areas for possible images. There is a never ending push to make it to the next sand dune while hiking to see what lies ahead.
